When a pregnancy is taking longer than you hoped.
Difficulty conceiving is common, and in most couples a cause can be found. We look after all types of infertility cases — tests for both partners, treatment matched to the cause, and counselling throughout — with scans, laboratory and IUI under one roof.
When to see a doctor.
Doctors usually suggest tests if you have been trying for a year without a pregnancy, or after six months if the woman is over 35. Come sooner if periods are irregular or absent, if there is known PCOS, endometriosis or a past pelvic infection, if there have been repeated miscarriages, or if either partner has had surgery or a condition that could affect fertility.
Infertility is not only a woman’s problem. In roughly a third of couples the cause lies with the man, in a third with the woman, and in the rest with both or remains unexplained. That is why we ask to see both partners from the start.
Many couples need only simple treatment: medicines to help ovulation, well-timed intercourse, or IUI. Where something needs surgery, such as blocked tubes, endometriosis or a polyp, it can often be done by laparoscopy or hysteroscopy in the same hospital.

Blood tests, a scan and semen analysis, mostly done in the hospital and timed to the woman’s cycle.
-
03

Once the results are in, you are told what they show and given a treatment plan that fits the cause.

Treatment and support
Regular visits and scans through each cycle, with counselling and a clear next step if a cycle does not work.
What patients ask us.
Should my partner come to the first visit?
Yes, if possible. Male factors are found in a large share of couples, and a semen analysis is one of the simplest and most useful first tests. Seeing both partners from the start avoids months of treatment aimed at the wrong cause.
What should we bring to the first appointment?
Any previous reports, scans, prescriptions and treatment records, and a note of the dates of the last few periods. If you have had any operations, bring those papers too.
Does every couple need IVF?
No. Many couples conceive with simpler treatment such as medicines to help ovulation, timed intercourse or IUI, or after a problem such as a blocked tube or a polyp is treated. If IVF is the better option for you, the doctor will explain why and what it involves.
Is everything we discuss kept private?
Yes. Consultations, test results and treatment records are confidential and are discussed only with the two of you.
This page is general information, not medical advice for your own case. Your consultant will advise you after an examination.
